Providing sustainable, effective remedial solutions for complex soil and groundwater contamination since 1993
Over 3,500 TreeWell® units installed across North America and Europe, with zero worker injuries in more than 30 years of installation.
Nature-based solutions in even the most challenging conditions.
TreeWell® technology provides solutions
Our patented TreeWell® Systems offer a cost-effective, nature-based, sustainable remediation alternative that can provide hydraulic control and contaminant mass reduction. Our technology allows access to deep groundwater and bedrock aquifers, and our methods promote in-situ microbial degradation of subsurface contaminants.
-
Our TreeWell systems can treat groundwater well beyond the shallow depths reached by traditional phytoremediation methods. With our systems, we have remediated groundwater at over 100 ft bgs. Standard units reach up to 20 ft bgs without irrigation, and up to 35-40 ft bgs with supplemental irrigation; our Straw TreeWell System extends this beyond 100 ft bgs.
-
Our systems are engineered to direct root growth and enable trees to uptake water from targeted lithologic intervals, including those beneath zones of clean groundwater.
-
With our patented technologies and methods, we have developed in situ, plant-based solutions effective even in circumstances generally considered phytotoxic. We have planted trees in a DNAPL area with concentrations greater than 65-ppm.
-
Our systems have been installed to provide hydraulic capture, effectively replacing aging and inefficient mechanical pump and treat systems. We have success achieving remedial objectives and receiving regulatory closure.
Contaminants successfully treated by TreeWell® Systems
• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) • Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs) including 1,4-dioxane • Pesticides • Agricultural inorganics such as nitrate & ammonium • Tritium • Solubilized metals: lead, arsenic, boron, zinc, cadmium

*Applied Natural Sciences is currently working on multiple pilot-scale TreeWell projects for the remediation of PFAS-impacted groundwater.
Our Services
Our services include site evaluation, remedial design, phytoremediation implementation, monitoring and maintenance, and our PHYTO-INTEGRATED® approach, which coordinates combined remediation strategies integrating our TreeWell-based engineered phytoremediation systems with complementary non-phyto remedial technologies.
How We Work
ANS operates as a hybrid remediation consultant and contractor, most often partnering with a site owner's environmental consultant to develop site-wide remedial strategies. We stay involved through the full project lifecycle — from early feasibility conversations through design, installation, and long-term monitoring.
Not every site is a fit for a TreeWell System. We conduct a thorough feasibility assessment before committing to a project, evaluating site hydrogeology and hydraulic conditions to confirm viability — an approach that prioritizes remediation outcomes over "buyer beware" installation.
Safety first.
Safety is a top priority in TreeWell installation, given the inherent risks of large-diameter borehole work. Our patented TreeWell Safety Platform, combined with decades-long relationships with preferred drillers and crews, has enabled ANS to install over 3,500 units over 30 years with zero worker injuries.
